The Pingus was released last year, but it should still be pretty available. It was harvested on October 5 and 6 under perfect conditions. It is a powerful and concentrated vintage for Pingus. I’m amazed at how much the wine integrated with one extra year in the bottle – the aromas are more precise, starting to reveal the true personality of the wine. The nose is very perfumed and balsamic, with notes of violets and ripe, juicy fruit, quite high-pitched. The oak is well-integrated into the wine. The palate is very powerful, full-bodied, concentrated but balanced, and wearing its 14.5% alcohol lightly, in a very difficult combination of power and elegance, with abundant but silky tannins. Very long aftertaste. 5,600 bottles were produced. Drink: 2015-2035.
– 97 points, Luis Gutierrez (Robert Parker, Wine Advocate) Dark purple. Drop-dead gorgeous aromas of spicy dark berries complicated by vanilla, mocha, espresso, iron, licorice and sexy oak spices. Sweet and expansive, showing great depth to its ripe blackberry and boysenberry flavors. Notes of candied flowers, cola and mocha gain strength with air and carry through an extremely long, sweet finish. There's plenty of structure here but it's hidden under all the dense fruit right now. That price is correct, sadly.
– 96 points, (Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar)
About Pingus:
Pingus is probably the other most important winery in Spain along with Vega Sicilia but on the modern side. Dominio de Pingus is responsible for a lot of changes in Ribera del Duero. It all began when danish Peter Sisseck went to Ribera del Duero to establish his own winery. He bought 5 hectares to start the garage revolution in Spain. His first vintage was the 1995 which Robert Parker said "it is one of the greatest and most exciting young red wines I have ever tasted" and gave it 98 points. Pingus 1995 was trading at $200 USD before it was even released. Pingus is one of the pioneers of Biodynamic viticulture in Spain and his wines have incredible finesse and elegance. They are like silk in the palate. There are some who say that Peter Sisseck manages with his wines to give a punch in the mouth with a silk glove. Pingus 2004 obtained 100 points with Robert Parker and is today the most expensive wine of Spain. Dominio de Pingus produces 3 wines: Pingus, Flor de Pingus (which is a fantastic value in the wine world) and the PSI.
