Castello Romitorio’s 2003 Brunello di Montalcino is dark and brooding in its expression of tar, earthiness, flowers, spices, toasted oak and cherries. It reveals a fairly classic structure in its linearity, yet also shows an attractive sweetness and vibrancy to its black cherry fruit. This big, backward Brunello needs at least another year or two in bottle to come around and should last to age 15, perhaps beyond..

– 90 points Antonio Galloni (Robert Parker, Wine Advocate)

The Brunello of Montalcino stands as the cornerstone of our production. Made from only the "Brunello" strain of the Sangiovese Grosso grape, this wine is one of the most treasured of all Italian reds. A careful selection of the harvest's bounty, strict adherence to technique, and constant checks during the aging process transform the grape into one of Italy's most revered wines. Ruby red in color, this wine possesses a fruity and spicy bouquet. Its velvety texture harmonizes the rich and balanced tannins completed by two years in oak, blending the wine's qualities into a character that is at once forceful and elegant.

– Sandro Chia Winemaker at Castello Romitorio
About the Estate:

Since Sandro Chia bottled his first "Romitorio del Romitorio" in 1984, he has made clear that his persuit of artistic perfection displays itself not only in the painted canvas but also in the glass. Over twenty years of sucess in art and winemaking has given Castello Romitorio the opportunity to refine our methods even further.

We understand wine as the ultimate, seductive fusion of art and agriculture. I have heard some say that the grapes are the language of the Mother Earth but her dialect is difficult to understand. It is up to us to interpret her and to reveal our own character with her bounty. We are not Bordeaux, nor Burgundy; not California nor the Mosel. Neither are we Barolo or Chianti. It would be obtuse even to call us Montalcino, assimilated seamlessly among 180 producers of Brunello. We are Castello Romitorio, and our language and our art is wine. www.castelloromitorio.com
